In 1989 the STAN theatre company’s four actors, Jolente De Keersmaeker, Waas Gramser, Damiaan De Schrijver and Frank Vercruyssen, graduated from the Royal Conservatory Antwerp with two productions: 'Achter de canapé / Yvonne op' after ‘Ivona, Princess of Burgundia’ by W. Gombrowicz and ‘Jan, scènes uit het leven op het land’ after ‘Uncle Vanya’ by A.P. Chekhov. Sara De Roo joined the collective in 1992. In 1994 Waas Gramser left STAN to set up her own company. Sara De Roo was part of the core company until 2017, at which point she went her own way, taking on (among other things) the coordination of the Conservatory.

A changing cast and interaction with other actors and companies have been an inherent part of STAN’s approach since the outset, as has its preference for text-based theatre, repertoire and literature. Thirty years and as many seasons later, these basic principles still hold true: an idiosyncratic vision of theatre, a collective approach, the actor as sovereign player and maker and, above all, a firm belief in the living power of theatre that is created on the stage evening after evening, together with the audience.

We will be celebrating this jubilee throughout the 2019-20 season by doing what we always do: performing a mixture of new creations and well-loved plays from the repertoire in Dutch and French in venues large and small at home and abroad.

STAN on the map

3,500 shows in 33 countries from Tunisia to Trondheim and from Tokyo to Toronto in the space of 30 years. STAN is tracking its incredible artistic journey in collaboration with the graphic design company Speculoos, which specializes in cartography. It is quite literally charting STAN’s three-decade-long journey and creating a map of all the places where the company has performed its shows, a map of this extraordinary theatre history through time and space.
The result of this cartographical survey will be presented to the public on a festive occasion in Antwerp on December 6th. Save the date!
